“Why exactly do you need my help in getting Barton and Yuy together?”
Both Maxwell and Winner stare at me with identical puppy-eyed expressions, thinking they can sway me into helping them out. It really isn’t any of their business or mine either for that matter to pry into the affairs of others. And God knows that both Barton and Yuy are intensely private people.
“Oh, come on, Wu,” Maxwell says pleadingly. “We couldn’t leave you out of Operation L-U-V now, could we?”
“Operation L-U-V?” I repeat, raising an eyebrow.
“That’s right,” Maxwell replies, grinning insanely. “So you’ll help us, right? Great!” he adds before I can get a word in, rubbing his hands together gleefully. Sighing in defeat, I figure that I should at least hear them out before deciding whether or not to tell them where to shove their little ‘operation.’
“So tell me,” I say, crossing my arms over my chest. “How exactly do you intend on bringing them together?”
“Well…” Maxwell rubs his chin, looking thoughtful. “Q-man and I talked about it and we decided that the best way to go about it was to scare them into thinking they might have lost each other.”
I narrowed my eyes slightly. “So this plan of yours will involve certain untruths as well?” I ask. “I thought you never lied, Maxwell.”
“Hey, did I say that I was going to be the one to tell them?” he queries, looking offended. “But anyway,” he continues, talking again before I can say anything. He does that a lot sometimes and it really gets on my nerves. “I thought that if we tell Heero that Trowa’s in trouble or something, then Heero would do his knight in shining spandex thing, go rescue him, they’d confess their love and then live happily ever after.”
“Maxwell, we are dealing with real life here, not fairytales,” I tell him irritably. “Besides, how do you plan on getting Barton into ‘trouble’ anyway? Surely Yuy would see through a plan as pathetic as that.”
“Hey!” the braided boy says defensively. “Like I said we’re still in the ideas stage right now. That’s why we came to you specifically asking for your help.”
“More like you demanded that I help you out,” I remind him and he shrugs.
“Tomah-to, tomay-to,” he says airily.
“So what are your thoughts on this situation, Winner?”
The blonde boy looks up and smiles serenely. “I think that both you and Duo have valid points,” he announces. “Yes, I agree with you in that we do need a better plan of action, but I also agree with Duo’s view that if we make them think that either one is in trouble, they’d immediately go to their rescue.”
“That’s true,” I admit. Barton is always putting others before himself, whether out of nobility or stupidity or sheer disregard for his own life, I don’t know. But he seems to go out of his way to make sure that Yuy stays safe and I know that the other boy would do the same for Barton.
To be honest, when Winner and Maxwell came to me today, I thought that those two were already involved. Barton doesn’t like getting too close to anyone, but he doesn’t mind Yuy invading his personal space. Yuy doesn’t seem to care much about anyone, but you can guarantee that if Barton always comes back from a mission later than he should, Yuy will be almost climbing the walls worrying over what might have happened.
Yuy also doesn’t like anyone touching his Gundam. Well, anyone other than himself or Barton. Sometimes they work together during repairs and if I, Maxwell or Winner had offered our help, Yuy would just brush us off. Barton however is another matter. Yuy accepts his help with no questions asked.
“Well, maybe we should make a variation of your plan, Maxwell,” I tell him. “We should still make it so that one of them goes to the other’s aid and I think I know a way in which we could pull it off…”
After hearing what I have to say, Maxwell’s grin threatens to split his face in two. “That’s brilliant, Wu-man!” he cries, flinging his arms around me and I try to brush him off as delicately as I can. “So it’s agreed, right? Quatre, you tell Trowa. Wu, you’ll go to Heero, all right?”
“I still don’t see why you can’t go to him,” I mutter, glaring at him.
“Hey, I said that I never lie, right? Besides, if I tried it, Heero would just ignore me totally or pull his gun on me. If you do it however, he’ll believe you straight away.”
I sigh, knowing that he’s right. “I still don’t understand how you manage to talk me into these idiotic endeavours,” I say wearily.
“Oh, come on, Wufei! If we pull this off, we’ll be bringing happiness to two people’s lives and that’s the best present anyone can get. Right?”
