“Hey, Q-man. Can we talk?”
“Sure thing, Duo,” I tell him, putting down my violin. Practise time was almost over anyway and I always enjoy talking with him anyway. I make room for him on the bed and he sits down beside me. He’s squirming in that way he does when he’s nervous or excited and I wonder what the cause is. “Is there something on your mind?”
He chews at his lower lip for a moment and I fight the urge to scold him for doing so. “I want to talk to you about Heero and Trowa,” he tells me finally.
“What about them?” I ask.
“Well, did you ever notice anything going on between them? Something to suggest that they like each other as…Oh, I dunno. Something more than friends?”
I smile in response. Yes, I have noticed the way Trowa and Heero act around each other. It’s painfully obvious to anyone that they care deeply about each other, but I know that both of them are too shy to push their relationship to the next level.
“Yes, Duo, I have noticed,” I reply. “Does it worry you?”
“Worry me?” he repeats, looking surprised. “Hell no! In fact, that’s what I wanted to discuss with you. How can I put this…Heero wants to get into Trowa ‘s pants, but he can’t quite figure out how?”
I have to laugh out loud at his bluntness. “Well, that’s one way of putting it,” I manage to get out in between giggles. “But yes, you’re quite right. They do seem to skirt around the issue somewhat.”
“Are they just being shy or stubborn?” Duo asks, looking thoughtful. “It just seems that everybody but them knows they’re in love and I plan on doing something about it!”
“Oh, Duo no,” I say quickly. “Don’t you think it would be best if we just let them sort out their own feelings?”
“Are you kidding? At the rate they’re flirting with each other, they’ll be forty by the time they decide that it’s time for a roll in the hay.”
“Duo, it really isn’t any of our business,” I tell him tactfully.
“Well, I’m making it my business,” he announces proudly. “After one too many nights of Heero sneaking out to pay his nightly visit to Trowa, I figured I’d better to something to help them.”
“You noticed too, huh?” I say, laughing. I’ve known that those two share a room for some time now. I have a connection with each of the other pilots and I can somehow sense what they’re feeling.
Trowa always seems to carry around this air of sadness, but that changes when Heero’s around. It’s like he only feels truly alive when he’s with Heero and I can feel his happiness. He fights it sometimes, like he doesn’t think he has the right to be happy, but even he acknowledges the fact that Heero makes him feel pretty special.
Heero feels it too and when they’re together, they make each other happy. Heero is slightly more complicated than Trowa in that he’s sometimes genuinely confused by his own emotions. Whereas Trowa thinks he isn’t allowed to feel inner peace, Heero flat out doesn’t understand it.
But together, they’re learning how to overcome that and although they may fight it, they can’t stop it from happening. They can’t help falling in love with each other. Maybe Duo’s right. Maybe they do need a little help.
“Well, what did you have in mind?” I ask, my curiosity getting the better of me. “You aren’t going to lock them in a room and not let them out until they’ve done the deed are you?”
“No,” he says, but he looks a little guilty. “It did cross my mind, but I thought that Heero would kill me if I tried to pull a stunt like that. So I decided to go for subtlety and since that isn’t exactly my strong suit, I thought I’d ask for your help.”
“So you want me to help you get those two together? You do realise that’s going to take some planning,” I warn him.
“Precisely,” he tells me with a grin. “And you’re the master of strategy, right? So if anyone will be able to find a way, it’s you.”
“You think too highly of me,” I say teasingly, but I smile anyway. It’s always nice to receive a compliment from anyone, but especially Duo since he doesn’t seem to hand them out all that often. “So you really think that we should help Trowa and Heero get together?”
“Sure I do!” he says enthusiastically. “If anything to stop them sneaking around late at night when they think we don’t know what’s going on. So come on, let’s plan!”
