A Day at the Park

Disclaimer: Yea though Gundam Wing does not belong to me, I still like to use the characters without permission from time to time. Don’t bother suing me; all you’d get is my Deathscythe Hell model kit.

“Do you think they’ve even kissed yet?”

“Duo, that’s really none of our business,” Quatre reminded the braided boy gently. “We have no need to pry into their affairs.”

“Yeah, I know,” said Duo with a grin. “Still, you must have wondered, huh? It took Heero forever to just work up the guts to tell Trowa that he liked him. I dunno, I guess I’m just tired of watching him dance around Trowa like he might bite him if he got too close.”

Quatre laughed and lightly slapped Duo’s arm. “That isn’t fair, Duo,” he said. “You know how shy they both are.”

Duo rolled his eyes and dug the toe of his shoe over the sand as he began to push himself slowly on the swing he was sitting on. He watched Trowa out of the corner of his eye. The taller boy was sitting a few feet away from them, having already declined Duo’s earlier request to push him on the swings, claiming that he was happy enough just to rest.

He was propped up against the trunk of a tree, his eyes closed and his expression serene. It wasn’t often that one would catch Trowa in a moment of introspection and it was times like this that Duo could understand what Heero saw in the quiet clown.

Trowa often came across as cold and unfeeling, but once you started to break down his barriers, he wasn’t a bad guy. He still didn’t really say much, which often drove Duo to distraction, but he seemed different around Heero. He was mellower, more open. It still surprised Duo to see how the taller boy’s eyes would soften when it came to the object of his affection, how his lips would quirk up into that tiny little smile of his.

It was even more amusing to see how Heero acted around Trowa. It was like Trowa could do no wrong in Heero’s eyes. The pilot of Wing would go out of his way to make sure that Trowa had whatever he wanted and it never ceased to crack Duo up whenever he saw Heero rushing ahead so that he could hold a door open for the taller boy.

“Where is Heero anyway?” Duo groused, kicking his legs so that he swung higher. “You know, it took me forever to try and drag him away from his precious computer, but then I said the magic words, ‘Trowa is coming along too,’ and he just shut down his laptop, grabbed his coat and that was it!” He shook his head in bemusement. “He better not have snuck back into the house for it or something. I told him that we were here to have some fun and chill out.”

“I’m sure he’ll be around somewhere,” Quatre replied. “Trowa doesn’t seem too worried so he can’t have gotten far.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” Duo said. He shifted a little so that he could see the blonde boy better. “Push me?” he asked, giving Quatre his best puppy-dog eyes.

“Oh, I don’t know,” Quatre teased. “You seem to be doing pretty well on your own there.” He rolled his eyes and sighed when Duo stuck out his lower lip and pouted, rising to his feet and walking behind the swing. He pushed Duo for a while, waiting until the braided boy gathered enough momentum so that he was high enough for him to manage it on his own.

He was shocked when Duo leapt off the swing and came crashing to the ground, breaking into a parachute roll before coming to halt and lying flat on his back. “Duo!” he called, rushing over to the other boy’s side. “Are you all right?”

Duo’s shoulders were shaking and at first, Quatre thought he was crying. “Oh no, are you hurt? Hold still, Duo and let me check you over.”

Duo waved him away and it wasn’t until Quatre got a closer look at his face that he realised that the braided boy was actually laughing. “Duooo!” he groaned, frowning down at the American.

“Sorry, Quatre,” Duo said between giggles. “I haven’t done that in years. You ever play that game when you were a kid to see who could swing the highest and then jump off without breaking anything?”

“I can’t say I ever did,” Quatre said, still looking slightly annoyed.

Duo noticed this and he pushed himself up into a sitting position. “Hey, sorry if I scared you,” he said, placing an arm on the blonde’s shoulder. “It just reminded me you know, of when I was a kid. When Father Maxwell and Sister Helen took me in at the orphanage, Sister Helen took me to the park once and she pushed me on the swings. I met a couple of other kids and they were swinging away like they didn’t have a care in the world. Me being me of course, I had to challenge them to see which one out of the three of us could throw themselves off the swing without getting hurt.” He shook his head, his eyes twinkling with amusement.

Quatre nodded to show that he was listening. It wasn’t often that Duo talked about his past and although Quatre was still a little upset with him for giving him such a fright, he was still eager to hear the rest of Duo’s story. “So what happened next?” he asked.

“Well, they took me up on it and we all had a great time trying to pull the biggest stunt. Until one of the kids went a little too far and he broke his arm.” Duo smirked. “That was the first time in my life that I was grounded. Sister Helen was mortified and she wouldn’t let me play out for a week after that little incident.”

“Was she a strict person?” Quatre asked curiously.

Duo shook his head. “Nah, she was cool. She just thought it had been stupid of me to risk my life like that. She made an example of that other boy and said that could have happened to me.” He paused for a moment and stared at Quatre thoughtfully. “You know, you remind of her a little.”

“How so?” Quatre queried. This was more information than Duo had ever given up about himself voluntarily and the blonde boy wondered why he had chosen today of all days to take a stroll down memory lane.

Duo shrugged his shoulders. “Well, you’re two of the kindest people I’ve ever met,” he began. “She used to drive herself to despair worrying about me all the time and I know that you do too.” He grinned at Quatre’s guilty expression. “Hey, don’t get all worked up about it. It’s nice to know that someone cares, you know?”

Quatre nodded. “Sometimes I wish my father would have been like that,” he said softly. “I always wished that instead of always tried to push me into something that I didn’t want to do. He was trying to make me into someone that I’m not and I remember wishing that he had let me do my own thing and be myself. He was so disappointed in me for becoming a Gundam pilot.”

“Why?” Duo asked with a frown.

“He wanted me to be the perfect son so that he could leave the Winner Enterprises to me,” Quatre said with a scowl. “Even though I have plenty of sisters who are more capable of managing the family business than I am, Father thought that as his only son, I was supposed to follow his every order and be just like him.” He looked down and managed a small smile. “I’m sorry. You don’t want to hear a poor little rich boy complaining about his life.”

“Hey, don’t worry about it,” Duo told him, snaking an arm around Quatre’s shoulders and squeezing gently. “Remember what we said when we first got together? We decided that it wouldn’t matter about either of our backgrounds. It didn’t matter about me being a street rat or you being some grand multi millionaire. I love you for being you, Quatre. I don’t care that you have all this money. I don’t care that you’re not the guy your father wanted you to be. All I care about is the Quatre that I know. The Quatre who worries himself sick over me. The Quatre who likes to sneak into my bed at night under the pretence that he’s cold or lonely when he really just wants to snuggle. The Quatre who cracked me up that time when he fell out of his Gundam and landed flat on his ass.”

Quatre turned a very fetching shade of red at the memory and Duo chuckled, leaning over to kiss one heated cheek. “See, I just love you for being yourself,” he said.

“Thanks, Duo,” Quatre said with a smile his cheeks still tinged red. He moved closer to the other boy and wrapped an arm around him, nuzzling the top of Duo ‘s head. “Hey, look, Heero’s back. Wonder where he went?”

Duo shrugged and watched the Japanese pilot make his way over to where Trowa was resting. Heero tapped the taller boy on the shoulder and Trowa opened his eyes, smiling ever so slightly when he saw who it was. Heero sat down next to him, shyly holding his hand out to Trowa who looked down, carefully accepting whatever it was that Heero had offered him.

Duo’s shoulders started shaking with silent laughter when he realised what had happened. “I can’t believe the Perfect Soldier went off picking flowers to give to his boyfriend,” he snickered.

Quatre nudged him playfully. “I think it’s sweet,” he said with a smile. “You never give me flowers like that.”

Duo only grinned in response, watching as Trowa gently wound his arm around Heero’s waist, resting his chin on the top of the other boy’s head. “Hey, I’ ve got an idea,” he said suddenly. “How much do you want to bet that they’ll kiss someday in a public place?”

“You know how private they both are,” Quatre told him. “I can’t really see it happening.”

“Okay then, I bet you ten credits that they will,” Duo said.

“Well in that case, you’d better have the money waiting for me when we get back,” Quatre replied. “Trowa would never kiss Heero in public. He’s too shy for that.”

He’d only just finished his sentence when out of the corner of his eye, he saw Trowa tilt Heero’s chin up and lightly brush his lips over the smaller boy’ s. Quatre’s jaw dropped in astonishment while Duo crowed with laughter.

“Did you see that?” he cried, grinning madly. “Trowa kissed Heero! Way to go guys!”

“Ssh!” Quatre hissed, clamping his hand over Duo’s mouth. “They’ll hear you!”

Duo merely pulled Quatre’s hand away and kissed his cheek. “I believe you owe me ten credits.”

Quatre grumbled in response and Duo laughed. “Hey, you know what? Forget about the bet. I’ll let it drop if you buy me some ice cream. How’s that sound?”

Quatre sighed, but he gave Duo an indulgent smile. “Ice cream it is then,” he said, rising to his feet and holding out a hand to help Duo up.

The braided boy grabbed his hand and stood, pulling Quatre in the direction of the ice cream stand. “Heero! Trowa!” he yelled. “Get your butts down here pronto! Quatre’s treating us all to ice cream!”

“Just announce it to the whole park why don’t you?” asked Quatre, giving the American a mock glare.

“Ahh, you love me really,” Duo said with a grin. Quatre couldn’t help but smile back, stopping the braided boy so that he could gently touch his lips to Duo’s.

“I do,” he said softly. “I love you, Duo. And you can go and announce that to the whole park as well. If I had my way, I’d want to let the whole world know how I feel about you.”

“Such a charmer,” Duo told him, kissing the tip of Quatre’s nose. “But I guess that’s why I love you so much.”

End.
