Wings

Part 7

“Oh…” Quatre said, at a loss for words. Trowa was angry with him. Angry! He never, ever would get the chance to be with Trowa. How had Duo done it?

Wufei just gave Quatre a nasty look, and walked away.

Heero went to them. “Do whatever you think is right,” he said to Quatre, and kissed Duo on the cheek.

Upon seeing this, Quatre sank to his knees.

Duo helped him up, and looked at him sadly.

“I know you think you haven’t got a chance with Trowa, but, seriously, if I can get through to Heero,” Duo jerked his head in Heero’s direction, and Heero snorted sarcastically, “It’s definitely possible with Trowa.”

“B—but,” sniffled Quatre, “He’s angry! When he’s angry he won’t listen to anyone, especially not me, because I’m the one who he’s a—a—angry at!” Quatre couldn’t help but start to wail.

“Quatre, come with me,” Duo said, and he dragged a sobbing Quatre to his room.

He made Quatre sit down on the bed, and asked him straight out to list all his problems.

Quatre sniffled, and stopped crying. “There’s so many, would you even bother to listen to all of them?”

Duo looked shocked. “Of course I would! Quatre, what’s wrong?

Trowa was walking angrily around the house, wondering why in the world Quatre would want to keep something secret from him. Weren’t they friends?

He walked past Duo’s room, and heard Duo asking a crying Quatre to list all his problems. Trowa leaned against the door and listened. This seems familiar, He thought grimly.

“W—well,” began Quatre, “The first thing is my job. There’s too much! I can’t take it! I’ve got a lot on my mind already, and my job is overloading my free-time!”

Duo looked serious. “I know. Quatre, you haven’t eaten in three days!”

Outside Trowa gave a small gasp so no one could hear him. Why hadn’t he been paying attention? Three days?

Back inside, Quatre looked ashamed and hung his head. “And my ankle is just the least of my worries,” Quatre added sadly.

“The second problem is,” Quatre continued, “I c—can’t swim!” Quatre’s lip trembled.

“You’ll learn,” Duo said immediately.

Quatre looked stunned. “I will?”

“Of course? I care if wouldn’t be able to! Do you think I’m heartless?”

“No! Of course not…”

“Well, continue.”

Quatre paused a very long time before he continued. Finally he shuddered, and sniffled, “No one loves me!”

Outside, Trowa almost screamed. What?!

Duo did scream. “WHAT?!?! WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN, QUATRE? I KNOW TONS WHO CARE!”

Quatre just shook his head. “I said love, not care.”

This kept Duo subdued for a moment. After a while, he said softly, “I love you like a brother, Quatre. I know there are tons others!”

“Name some, then!”

Duo was going to say Trowa, but he hesitated. Trowa would shoot him! Quatre took this as a no-answer.

“See?” he said tearfully, “No one has loved me! I never knew my mother, my sisters love me because they have to, Trowa can't stand me, and—and…my father…”

Quatre went quiet.

Trowa was horrified. Quatre thought he hated Quatre? Ridiculous!

Duo looked at Quatre, his eyes shining with tears. “That isn’t true…” He began, but Quatre cut him off.

“I’m not done yet!” Quatre said, his eyes misting over. “The last problem is Trowa. I think of him all the time! During work, my mind wanders to him. I can’t concentrate! I wish he cared for me like did Heero does with you, but that’ll never happen! Can’t he see I love him?”

Outside, Trowa nearly killed himself. Quatre loved him? It couldn’t possibly be! He never knew he cared. He slumped to the floor, disbelieving.

Quatre began sobbing again. “It’s a living hell not to tell him about my wings!”

At this Trowa’s heart stopped. Wings? What was Quatre talking about? He couldn’t take it any longer. He ripped open the door to Duo’s room. He walked over to a terrified looking Quatre, and grabbed him by the collar.

“Wings?” he cried, “What do you mean?”

Quatre went ghostly pale.

Duo ran over to the two. “Trowa, Quatre’s been through enough! Put him down!”

But Trowa didn’t seem to hear him.

“Tell me!” he roared, at a Quatre, going paler with shock.

Suddenly Heero and Wufei ran into the room, and froze at the scene being played before them.

“Put Quatre down!” yelled Duo, but Trowa didn’t seem to be listening at the moment.

Finally Trowa flung Quatre on Duo’s bed. No one had ever seen him act like this.

“Show me now, or else!” Trowa screamed.

Whatever color there had been left in Quatre’s face was completely gone now.

“F—fine, Trowa. W—whatever y—you w—wish.” He said faintly, stammering worse than ever.

Everyone watched, astonished, as Quatre closed his eyes. A glow appeared at his back, and glowing, feathery white wings appeared. Quatre looked up sadly.

Trowa stepped back in shock. This was Quatre’s secret?

“Quatre, I—I’m so sorry…” he tried, but Quatre, still white, suddenly moaned and dropped to his knees, and then collapsed completely. His wings folded to his back and disappeared.

Trowa ran over to the unconscious Quatre, knelt over, and grabbed his shoulders. Quatre’s head dropped to his back. He was still white.

“Oh, Quatre, it’s all my fault,” Trowa whispered to Quatre softly, setting him on a couch. “I’ve never overreacted like that before.”

He glanced at the others. They looked nervous. Finally Heero spoke.

“I wonder how Quatre got wings. Something must have happened.” He said, sounding worried, nervous, and confused all the same time.

Trowa nodded bleakly. Finally he said something to his self, but everyone heard. “He looked like an angel.”

Everyone glanced at each other, and their thoughts were confirmed. Trowa loved Quatre, but he couldn’t say ‘I Love you’.

Duo was beyond miserable. He had meant for this to be a vacation, not Quatre’s living hell.

“I think I’ll go out,” Duo told everyone.

Everyone nodded.

“See you,” Duo said vaguely, and walked out.

Wufei was not feeling well and felt alone, as Quatre was, well, not really in a talking mood, and Trowa lost in his own world.

Wufei simply shook his head. “Poor Quatre.”

Heero decided to follow Duo at a distance. He wanted to make sure he didn’t go and do anything stupid.

He followed Duo to a cliff right above the crashing waves.

He sat behind a few trees, watching Duo. At first Duo sat down, thinking and looking miserable.

Probably thinking about how horrible Quatre’s vacation is going, Heero contemplated.

Buy then, to Heero’s astonishment, Duo stood up and began to dance, his braid twirling.

It was so beautiful. Duo seemed oblivious to everything, and Heero was mesmerized.

Duo was right near the edge, when a massive wave came up and hit the border of the cliff.

The part Duo was dancing on crumbled and fell to the waves below, taking Duo with them.

Heero stood, shocked for a moment, until he heard Duo’s surprised scream.
