Wings

Part 6

Quatre was at a loss of what to do. Why, with his wings, practically anything was possible! But then, of course, He shouldn’t get too greedy. This was obviously something had never happened before, and besides, he didn’t want to upset The Angel Of the Moon, and come un-pure of heart anyway.

But, then, how would wings help him with anything anyway? Of course it was fabulous to be able to fly, and have such radiant wings to do the flying, but she had said she she’d come to help.

What was he going to do? Fly in circles?

I’m being selfish. She gave you wings! What more could you want, Quatre? I should be thanking her, not doubting her. Quatre sighed. Life could be so confusing.

So Quatre decided to fly home. No friends or not, he couldn’t stay here forever…

Duo’s eyes widened. He stared at Heero.

“Wha—m—me beautif—?”

But Heero cut him off with a kiss.

Duo gasped with surprise. He had not expecting something like this to happen at all. Nothing this wonderful. But Heero didn’t have feelings…right?

Heero was actually a soft kisser, not rough like Duo always imagined. He liked it.

Heero pulled away, and looked at Duo, with—was it? Impossible!—love.

Duo’s familiar Weak-In-The-Knees feeling came back, and stronger than ever.

Heero saw Duo’s trembling knees.

“Something wrong, Duo?” he asked.

“I—I just, wasn’t expecting…” Duo could hardly speak.

Heero’s eyes sparkled. “No one would actually expect, Duo.”

Duo smiled. “I thought you hated me, Heero. What happened?”

“I never hated you, Duo.”

“B—but—”

Heero put two fingers on Duo’s mouth, which silenced him almost immediately.

Duo looked up at Heero, his violet eyes looking up at him questioningly.

Heero was very surprised when one, shining tear slid down Duo’s face.

“Duo, what’s wrong?”

“I—I’m just so happy!” he cried, sobbing into Heero’s chest.

Heero looked down at Duo. “I am too, Duo, I am too.”

And they held each other under the stars for a long time.

The house was almost in sight, but something told Quatre he should keep his wings a secret for a while.

He lowered himself to the ground softly, and folded his wings to his back. As the angel said, his wings absorbed into his back.

He walked the rest of the way into his house, but as soon as he stepped in, he felt horribly sad. There had, after all, been a reason he ran away.

His ankle did hurt, but not so much as it would have if he hadn’t flown nearly the whole way.

Before he landed though, he had seen two figures hugging each other on the balcony. He wished for his wings again. Hiding behind a tree, he saw that one of the silhouettes had a braid—that was Duo.

But the other, Quatre saw with great astonishment, was Heero. Heero? Quatre almost forgot he was hiding, and that he was in mid-air, and he almost got stuck in the tree he was hiding behind. That’d be a sight for sore-eyes, Quatre thought grimly.

How did Duo ever melt Heero’s heart? Heero is stone cold! Quatre thought. He was extremely delighted that his friend had gotten what he always wanted, but he felt a pang of sorrow knowing that the two standing on the balcony could never be him and Trowa.

Quatre went inside, practically flew on his bed, and fell fast asleep almost as soon as he touched the mattress.

Trowa was restless, tossing and turning. He couldn’t sleep because he wasn’t sure if Quatre was back yet.

So Trowa got out of bed and quietly walked down the hall, looking in Quatre’s room. To his great relief, Quatre was on his bed, fast asleep. He had been so tired he still had his bathing suit and the button-down shirt on.

Trowa smiled, and slept much better than before.

The next morning Quatre didn’t come down to breakfast, and Duo decided he should go and check on Quatre.

I hope he still isn’t angry with us…Duo thought worriedly.

Quatre had indeed woken up already, but he was too preoccupied to remember breakfast. At first he thought last night was only a dream, but when he wished for his wings to be there, they appeared, as Miss Moon had said.

Quatre was standing in front of his mirror checking out his wings, when all of a sudden Duo walked in.

Quatre looked at Duo, and Duo looked at Quatre, then Quatre’s wings, and they both screamed.

Trowa, Wufei, and Heero were having breakfast when they heard the screams.

They ran to Quatre’s room. The door was closed, and Trowa, Heero, and Wufei decided to pretend they weren’t there, so they could listen to the conversation.

“D—Duo!” Quatre gasped, quickly folding his wings and absorbing them into his back.

“Oh my god,” Duo stammered.

The boys listened intently.

“Duo, please don’t tell anyone,”

“But Quatre, the others should know about them!”

“I don’t want Trow—I mean, the others to know.”

Back out side the door the boys glanced at Trowa, who looked bewildered.

“Please don’t tell anyone Duo, please!”

“They have a right to know… I’m going to tell them, Quatre.”

“No, please!”

The boys couldn’t take it anymore. They burst into the room.

“Tell me what?” Trowa asked Quatre.

Quatre gasped.

“I—I”

They all turned to Duo. Duo looked at Quatre, his head hung sadly, thinking his friend didn’t care about his secrets.

He put his arm around Quatre. “I promised I wouldn’t tell.” He said.

Quatre turned to him, wide eyed. “Thank you Duo!” he cried.

Trowa wasn’t happy. “Tell me what?”

Quatre didn’t seem very happy either. “You’ll know, sometime.”

Everyone frowned.

“I’m sorry—I know it sounds strange, but…”

Quatre found he couldn’t continue, so he just hung his head.

Trowa clenched his fists and walked away.
