Disclaimer: Not only do I not own this anime, I don't even own any of the characters in it! They're all real people! Except two. And they belong to my vorpal bunny. Beware, it WILL eat you if you steal this story.
Notes: I just thought it'd be funny if Duo was mistaken for a boy when he was disguised as a girl.
Leslie glomped her friend, Karrie as she bounced into the room where the Quizbowl team was meeting. She was greeted with a laugh and a glomp back. That accomplished, she took a step back to talk, "Ohmigosh, Karrie, did you see that new boy in the hall just now?"
Karrie cocked her head to the side, "There's a boy out there? Only person I saw was Kelly. She's new, and she's gonna join Quizbowl. Said she's good with math."
Leslie did a little dance, "Yes! We need more math people like crazy." Sobering, she smirked at Karrie, "But anyway, I was talking about this really cute guy I saw, and he must be new, cuz I've never seen him before. He was wearing those baggy pants with the chains all over them, you know, like everyone's wearing? I wanna know where he found purple ones, though."
"Purple?" interrupted Karrie, "Kelly's wearing those same pants." Leslie sighed dramatically, "Then I'll ask her, too, but he's got this uber-long hair in a ponytail and big, I'm talking huge blue eyes." Karrie frowned, now looking quite confused, "That's Kelly exactly." Leslie, too, frowned in confusion, "Well, that just doesn't make sense. Maybe they're related?"
Karrie pointed beyond Leslie, "You can go ask." Leslie turned around and was surprised to see the person she had assumed to be a boy frowning at her. As she had said, Kelly was wearing baggy black pants with purple threading and silver chains, with a My Chemical Romance hoodie over it. Behind Kelly was a boy with hard, bright blue eyes and semi-long dark brown hair. He was dressed in a button-down shirt with blue jeans.
"You thought I was a boy?" asked Kelly incredulously. Leslie felt the skin of her mocha-brown face flush with heat and she shoved a wisp of dark hair back as she gave Kelly a sheepish look, "Sorry, I did. I've seen some really pretty guys before, and I thought you were one."
Kelly gave her chest a mournful look, "I know they're small, but c'mon." Leslie giggled, "I've got a friend who says that same kind of thing all the time. You should meet her, she's really cool." Leslie peered around Kelly, "By the way, who's your friend? Is he joining the team, too?" The boy gave Leslie an evil look, "No." Leslie blinked, holding up her hands in a sign of surrender, "I get the point, and am backing off, now. Quit looking at me like I blew up your puppy." He blinked.
Kelly frowned at the boy, "Quit looking so mean, Odin. This is prolly gonna be fun." "Hey!" It was Mr. Bircham. He was the Quizbowl team coach and really cool, "It's time to get started. Starters, in. Alise, you're in the number one spot, James, you're number two, Frodo[1], you're number three and..."
Karrie interrupted him, "You should put Kelly in the number four spot. She says she's really good at math." Kelly blushed, "Well..I'm only in FST." Leslie grinned, "Me, too. What grade are you in?" "Tenth."
"Kelly, you're in the number four spot," declared Mr. Bircham. Leslie sighed dramatically, "We've got another Isty on our hands, except a girl." Kelly looked confused, but was pointed to her seat by James and Alise. An hour and a half later, Kelly had gained the admiration and envy of the entire team. She was fast on the buzzers and good with math. She had won the JV team a game and made the others very close, when the games usually measured out to be 300 points for the Varsity or "Starter" team against 20-80 for the newer team.
The starter team congealed around Kelly at the end of practice, Amos and Peter having joined Leslie and Karrie's pleased griping about the questions they almost got. "Jeez, Kelly, you're making us look bad," joked Karrie, causing Kelly to blush and shake her head, "Nah, I've just got good reflexes. I learn really fast and I just kind of hold onto it." Leslie laughed, "Kelly, if you had joined last year, you'd be another three-Quizbusters member." Leslie glared good-naturedly at Peter who shrugged, "Whatever." Leslie shook her head at Peter and turned back to Kelly, "Anyway, don't forget: We meet every Monday and Tuesday after school." Kelly nodded and she and her evil-looking friend left.
Leslie meandered around the Target near her house. She was bored nearly to death. She had been planning on visiting Target to get some food, but had let herself get blown around the side, towards the graveyard. She liked graveyards, as morbid as it seemed, because they made it easy to exercise her empathic powers. It had been two months since Kelly had joined the team, always with Odin, whom Leslie had started to suspect was Kelly's boyfriend, even though she'd never say that.
She looked up from her perusal of the pavement in the graveyard at the sound of a moan. It sounded vaguely like Kelly, except deeper. Maybe Kelly did have a brother? Leslie decided to take a closer look and see what the hell was going on. She heard the moan again as she got closer, "Heero." She blinked and searched her memory banks real quick for that name. Finding that it wasn't there, she decided to just see who was there.
For a moment, she had no idea who it was. The way they were seated threw shadows on their faces under the lamppost. Leslie paused, certain that she was going to see something that would be important, although she had no idea why. The person on top, dressed in dark clothing, threw their head back, crying out, "Heero! Yes, just like that!" She started and almost ran, when she saw who it was. It was Kelly, looking very, very much like a man screwing another man. Then she saw who "Kelly" was on top of. It was Odin, or maybe his name was Heero? She didn't wait to find out and fled, her face flushed with embarrassment.
Leslie waited outside the door to the Quizbowl practice room. When she saw Kelly and Odin, she walked over, her face flushing as she did, "Hey, can I talk to you guys?" Kelly gave Odin a confused look, then looked at Leslie, "Uhm...sure." Leslie lead them away from the practice room, more towards the deserted hallways of the school.
After making sure noone was around, Leslie looked hard at the pair and quietly declared, "I saw you two in the graveyard by Target." Odin's eyes widened and his face hardened, his body tensing and his arm making some kind of backwards motion. Kelly frowned, then let the artificial higher pitch drop into his normal voice, "Ok, you found us out. Now what?"
Leslie was taken aback by his candor, but she recovered, "I won't give you away or anything, but if you aren't who you say you are, who are you?" She pointed at Odin, "You called him Heero. I didn't stay long enough to hear if he called you something else." Kelly shrugged, "His name's Heero. Mine's Duo." His eyes were hard as he added, "You don't want to know anything else about me. Or Heero. Just know that we're good guys." Leslie was not satisfied with that answer at all, but she nodded curtly and let it go, "I'm gonna trust you to not tell anymore lies, cause you're my friends."
The entire Quizbowl team noticed when Kelly and Odin left the school, and they mourned their team's chances for the next year. Leslie just sighed to herself and pouted, "I was right, too."
[1] Frodo: There is actually a guy on our Quizbowl team who looks so much like Frodo that we call him that. I changed all the other names (Including mine) , but the personalities are the same.
