quatre's gift

disclaimers: i don't own any of the g-boys as much as really wish i did. i'd be in heaven if i did. um, there's yaoi in this, a little sap and maybe a tiny bit of angst. you decide on that.

“we’re here! merry christmas, quatre!” duo called out as bounded excitedly into the winner mansion. he caught quatre up on a huge hug, swinging him around the room.

“merry christmas, duo.” the blond stumbled to get his balance as duo set him back on the ground. “where’s heero?”

“right here,” came the muffled answer.

quatre turned to see the japanese boy in the doorway, loaded down with gifts. “heero! let me help you.”

heero shook his head. “iie, i’ve got it. that was a certain braided baka’s job anyway.”

duo’s eyes widened in innocence. “who? me? i got the door for you, hee-chan. i couldn’t have done that if i was carrying stuff.”

heero just grunted and brought the presents in to the tree. quatre helped relieve him of the pile, while duo tore around the room bursting with energy. “q-man, this place is huge! and so pretty! heero, can you believe we’re spending our first married christmas in such a huge beautiful mansion? where’s trowa and wufei?”

three years after the war, all five pilots still kept a close friendship. wufei was spending most of his time working for the preventers. heero and duo had been married a few months earlier, realizing that neither one could live without the other. quatre and trowa still held a strong relationship; although quatre was often busy with his businesses and trowa still performed with the circus.

“they should both be on their way,” quatre answered, carefully arranging the gifts beneath the tree. “trowa said he might be a bit late though. he was spending the morning with catherine.”

heero sat back on his heels and studied the blond’s face. “you miss him, ne?”

quatre flushed slightly. “hai. it has been awhile since i last saw him.”

“hee-chan! i miss you,” duo said draping himself over his husband. “hold me.”

“baka. how can you miss me? i’m right here.” but he pulled duo’s face down and kissed him affectionately.

quatre smiled softly as he watched them, then jumped to his feet as the doorbell rang.

“merry christmas, guys.” wufei handed some gifts to quatre and shook the snow from his coat. “the snow started, and the radio said there should be a lot of it.”

the two boys headed into the living room. not too much, quatre prayed silently, hoping trowa would make it safely and soon.

“master quatre?”

quatre glanced up from the tv. he and the other three boys were watching white christmas while still waiting for trowa. quatre and wufei were lounged on either end of the couch. heero was settled deep in the big armchair with duo curled up on his lap. “yes, rashid?”

“how much longer would you like to continue putting dinner off? it is beginning to get cold.”

the little blond sighed. “i know, but trowa’s still not here, and i don’t want to start without him.

“but quatre,” duo whined, “it’s like 8:00. i’m hungry! let’s just go ahead and eat. trowa won’t mind. he is late after all.”

heero yanked down on his husband’s braid, extracting a loud yelp from the boy. “stop complaining.”

duo pulled his braid out of the japanese boy’s reach and clutched it protectively. “heero! that hurt! and i’m still hungry. if i can’t eat dinner, i’ll just have to eat you.”

heero simply raised and eyebrow and smirked.

“okay, quatre. let’s go eat.” wufei pushed himself to his feet and pulled the arab up after him. he nodded to rashid as he hurried heero and duo out to the dinning room.

pausing at the door, quatre glanced towards the christmas tree’s bright lights. oh trowa. where are you?

quatre touched the cold glass of the window softly as he stared out at the deepening snow. he was startled out of his thoughts as a quiet snore rose up from duo, and he turned back to the room.

wufei was stretched out on the couch, buried beneath blankets. only his black hair peeked out over the top as he slept. heero lay snuggled in duo’s arms on the floor. they clung to each other as if they’d been separated for years and never wanted to let go.

wrapping paper and ribbon was strewn all over the room from the open gifts. around midnight, the boys had finally decided to exchange presents. only trowa’s remained under the tree.

quatre glanced at his watch. 2 am. what could possibly be keeping trowa? he returned to staring out the window at the darkness.

he missed his koi so badly. it was hard to find time to just be together, and they had both been looking forward to christmas so they could see each other. quatre treasured every moment with trowa and felt as if a piece of him was missing when he wasn’t there.

a sudden movement outside caught the blond’s attention. as he tried to focus through the whirling snowflakes, he thought he saw a flash of headlights. “trowa?”

the lights continued to approach the house, and quatre pressed his hands and forehead against the glass. then, at about where the front gate was, the lights flickered and disappeared.

quatre’s shoulders slumped, and he turned away from the window. “just accept it quatre,” he whispered to himself. “he’s not coming.”

he kicked at the gift wrap covering the floor and glared down at the sleeping forms of duo and heero. “how come you two get to be together, but trowa can’t be here?”

the small boy’s head shot up as he heard a soft creak from the front door. he charged into the hall just in time to see a tall figure, arms full of packages, slip into the house.

“trowa!” quatre tackled his koi, sending them both tumbling out into the snow.

they lay together, oblivious to the cold & kissing fervently. nothing in the world mattered to quatre except for trowa’s warm, loving touch and the sweet taste of his lips.

“gomen nasai, little one,” trowa whispered into the silence. “i’ve missed you so much, and i never meant to be this late—”

“shh.” quatre pressed a finger against trowa’s lips, and the taller boy kissed it softly. “it doesn’t matter. you’re here now, and that’s the best christmas present i could ever ask for.”
